There is no doubt about it: Paris is home to some of the richest history and most beautiful architecture in the world. However, if you’re travelling Paris with children, it can definitely be difficult to keep them entertainment after a day or two of visiting the city’s cathedrals. For those looking to mix up their sight-seeing, consider paying a visit to Paris’ Jardin d’Acclimatation.
About the Jardin d’Acclimatation
Nearly 50 acres in size, the Jardin d’Acclimatation is a children’s amusement park that features a zoo, the Exploradome museum, and various other attractions. Located in Paris’ Bois de Boulogne, the Jardin first opened way back in 1860 by Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie, and has quite the history. During the Siege of Paris, many of the zoo’s animals at the time were stolen and used to feed families.
Afterwards, in the late 19th century/early 20th century, the zoo became more anthropologically-oriented, and indulged Parisians’ curiosity about foreign races, customs, and lifestyles. For a period of time, the center “exhibited” individuals from other countries, particularly from African tribes. Today, the Jardin d’Acclimatation is best described as a combination of park, mini-zoo, and amusement park, with plenty of other attractions to enjoy.
Sights and Activities
The Jardin d’Acclimatation is home to plenty of fun, family-friendly attractions that will keep everyone entertained. There is an archery range, boat rides, a miniature golf course, an equestrian area, rides, marionette shows, and a splash park, just to name a few of the reasons to head to the Jardin. The area also boasts the Children’s Museum, a Tea House, and a lovely Winter Palace.
Nature still plays an important role at the Jardin, and there is a small farm that is home to sheep, rabbits, goats, chickens, and other animals. Over in the aviary, visitors can see some of the Jardin’s birds, which includes tropical parrots, black swans, wild turkeys, and parakeets. The Jardin offers a good variety of fun workshops to keep children entertained, while developing their creative skills.
Workshops (which are held at different times, depending on the day of the week) include cooking, gardening, magic, theatre, calligraphy, and artistic make-up, just to name a few. (Workshop prices range from €20 to €47, depending on the package, and include admission to the center). For toddlers, there are Gymboree workshops that focus on motor skills, games, and music. For adults who want to get involved, there is even a Pastry Workshop to try out!
Plan Your Visit
From April to September, the Jardin d’Acclimatation is open from 10 am to 7pm. During the other months, the opening hours are from 10am to 6pm. It is open 365 day a year. The attraction can be easily reached by public transportation; simply get off at the Les Sablons metro station, take Exit 2, and head down Rue d’Orleans.
The entrance is about 150 meters away. There are also a number of buses that go to the Jardin. General admission to the Jardin d’Acclimatation is $3, while kids under 3 and seniors are admitted for only €1.50. To enjoy the rides, tickets must be purchased. A single ticket costs €2.90, and the majority of rides require one or two tickets. Make sure to pack the kids’ swim wear so they can enjoy the splash park.Though there are cafés and restaurants where you can purchase food, there is also plenty of space to sit back and enjoy a picnic.
